Alison Pouliot- learning wild edible mushrooms from the experts

Alison Pouliot is a renowned ecologist and environmental photographer who has dedicated over two decades to the study and appreciation of fungi. Splitting her time between the northern and southern hemispheres, she ensures she experiences two autumns each year, maximizing her exposure to the diverse world of fungi. Her extensive work includes conducting workshops, seminars, and publishing articles and books on the subject of fungi.

Alison's book, "Wild Mushrooming: A Guide for Foragers," co-authored with Tom May, is an extensively illustrated guide that provides the necessary information for the safe collection of fungi. It is essential reading for mushroom enthusiasts, ecologists, conservationists, medical professionals, and anyone interested in the natural world. 

In her workshops, Alison emphasizes a 'slow mushrooming' approach, encouraging participants to thoroughly learn to identify a few edible species rather than many superficially. This method reduces the risk of poisoning and environmental harm, promoting safe and responsible foraging practices.

For those looking to deepen their knowledge of edible mushrooms, a unique opportunity is available on Saturday, April 26; Sunday, April 27 and Tuesday, April 29, 2025. I will be collaborating with Alison Pouliot, on a series of Mushroom Foraging Masterclasses in Lithgow, NSW. The five-hour immersive experiences are designed for individuals who already have basic mushroom foraging experience and wish to expand their understanding under the guidance of esteemed experts. 

Participants can expect to gain world-class knowledge of the fungi kingdom and edible mushrooms. The masterclasses include a cooking, preserving, and tasting session run by Forage to Feast Australia’s Marnee Fox, providing a comprehensive understanding of how to enjoy and preserve your seasonal bounty. Additionally, attendees will receive a wild mushroom-specific recipes eBook and follow-up information with links and tools to continue their mushroom journey. 

The event is scheduled from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, with the exact location to be disclosed to ticket holders a few days before the event. Participants are advised to bring suitable clothing for the forest environment, sturdy hiking boots or gumboots, long pants, water, snacks, a packed lunch, a knife, a basket (preferably wicker), and a camera to capture the experience. 

The three scheduled masterclasses are a unique offering, as Alison hardly ever facilitates actual foraging workshops in Australia, due to restrictions and regulations that prevent people from harvesting from the environment. We can do this because we secured a permit from Forestry NSW, making this event a rare opportunity.

These masterclasses represent not only an ecological awakening but also a cultural experience. For generations, mushroom foraging has been cherished by various cultures in Australia, making it a seasonal must-do, perfect for sharing stories and delicious recipes. Don't miss this extraordinary opportunity to learn from two of the most respected experts in the field. 
